                   Irma Stern visited Zanzibar in both 1939 and 1945. The charcoal sketches

                   featured here are preparatory works used by Stern in the painting titled

                   'Children Writing'. This painting appeared illustrated on p102 of 'Irma

                   Stern: Expressions of a Journey' published in conjunction with the

                   exhibition held at the Standard Bank Gallery in November 2003.
